Clara's obvious pain from foot disfigurement.  Note the constant shifting as she tries to find a comfortable position.  Also, note the water she enters is freezing, but it offers at least temporary respite for her aching feet.

A St. Louis summer heat wave finds the elephants out in the sun with no adequate cover.  The endless swaying and shifting are typical repetitive behaviors seen in zoo animals the world over.  Clara is especially uncomfortable because of her chronic foot problems.  Imagine having to stand on super-heated hard ground with open sores on your feet. Pearl, Clara's dear friend and companion, is still suffering with a prolapsed uterus and urine burns on her rear legs and feet.  (heat wave continued)
